What are chemical peels?
Chemical peels are a type of chemical exfoliation procedure using chemical solutions to improve the appearance of the skin. They are available in various formulations from a liquid solution to a cream, gel solution and sometimes as a mask. Chemical peels either comprise of a solo ingredient such as an alpha hydroxy acid/beta hydroxy acid or a blend of acids, antioxidants, brightening ingredients, hydrating ingredients and herbal ingredients.

How does a chemical peel work?
Chemical peels are a form of chemexfoliation which induce trauma or injury to the layers of your skin in a controlled manner. These layers of your skin eventually peel off revealing a more youthful skin. This new skin is usually brighter, more even in complexation, smoother in texture, with fewer fine lines and wrinkles and more hydrated.
Some chemical peel treatments will require prepping the skin with milder acids, antioxidants and brightening solutions for a minimum of 2 weeks prior to treatment.
The uniqueness of black and brown skin
Black and brown skin is unique in the sense that is contains far more melanin than lighter skin tones, this means that hyperpigmentation is a major problem in skin of colour. Black and brown skin also more compact and contains less ceramide; an essential fat in the skin needed for hydration, which means it’s harder for products to penetrate. This is when a chemical peel can be beneficial because it will help remove the top layer of the skin thus allow better ingredient penetration of the brightening ingredients in the chemical peel while the acids gently exfoliate the superficial layers of the skin, when tackling hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, the chemical peels it can help strength the skin barrier by boosting ceramide and hyaluronic acid content both of which are needed for effective skin hydration.
Black and brown skin are also known to have higher prevalence of acne than white skin due to higher sebum concentration, this is the oil produced by skin and is one of the factors contributing to acne formation. Chemical peels such as salicylic acid are oil soluble and thus are pore-exfoliating, anti-bacterial and help reduce excess sebum production. This type of peel is safe in darker skin tones and help reduce acne.
